Description
Badlands National Park in South Dakota has a hauntingly compelling beauty about it. The National Park Services says this...
The rugged beauty of the Badlands draws visitors from around the world. These striking geologic deposits contain one of the world’s richest fossil beds. Ancient mammals such as the rhino, horse, and saber-toothed cat once roamed here. The park’s 244,000 acres protect an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets live today.

And this is all true, but I think it is even more. It is a place where you can experience the beauty and peace of creation in an almost completely unspoiled way. The way to experience it more deeply like this is to stay in and around the park for an extended period of time. Stay in the park or in nearby Wall Drug then go into the park and go to a very quiet place and just be. Maybe walk silently and just see and feel the space. It feels like you might be very close to heaven.
One very odd thing to know is that This park is very close to the Rosebud Indian reservation and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (Do you remember Wounded Knee). This is one of the poorest places in the entire country. So to have the knowledge of these places being so close to this amazing park has a deep influence on the experience of the place and it puts it in a different historical context.
I recommend that you put Badlands National Park on your travel agenda and plan to stay there for an entire week and experience the place slowly. Experience it at an existential level and actually know the place.
I would love to hear your experiences of this place. Send me a note.
