Description
Charm of Vieux Nice Old Nice France
The old town (Vila-Vielha or more commonly Babazouk in Nice ) is the old part of the city of Nice .
It is animated during the day by many shops, which can be as extremely typical (selling olives and spices of all kinds, local vegetables or local flowers) as very modern (fashionable clothing shops, many tattoo artists) as well as artists' galleries. At night, it is a place of rendezvous and exit for Nice. Its narrow streets are lined with restaurants, pubs and clubs of all kinds.
Its inhabitants also speak of the "old city" ( vielha vila in Nice ). In the past, Babazouk's nickname was also given to him, a local adaptation of the Arabic expression meaning the "souk door".
Old Nice is bordered:
to the east: by the hill of the castle (the fortress in question was destroyed in 1704 by the troops of Louis XIV besieging once again the city, one of the bullets fired by the besiegers falling in the reserve of powder of the citadel );
to the south: by the sea and the quay of the United States (extension of the promenade des Anglais );
in the west: by the cover of Paillon (on which are built in particular place Masséna and the National Theater of Nice );
to the north: by Piazza Garibaldi .
The neighborhood includes several administrative buildings such as the town hall or the Courthouse. There is also the Opéra de Nice .
